Wix SEO in 2026: what actually changed, and why most blogs about it are still wrong.

Wix had a bad SEO reputation for years. That reputation stuck around long after the platform stopped deserving it. Here is what most blogs about Wix SEO are missing, written by an SEO director who built an award-winning campaign on it.

If you have spent any time researching whether Wix is good for SEO, you have probably read the same handful of blogs. They follow a pattern. They list pros and cons. They mention that Wix used to be bad for SEO but has improved. They give you a checklist. They link to a comparison with WordPress. And then they leave you exactly where you started, which is uncertain.

I have been doing SEO professionally for years and run an agency that has built campaigns on Wix, WordPress, Shopify, custom platforms, and pretty much everything in between. In 2025 we won the Global Search Awards Best Low Budget SEO Campaign for work we did on a Wix site. Wix featured our case study publicly. So when I tell you what is actually true about Wix SEO in 2026, it is not from a platform review or a side-by-side comparison test. It is from operating on it at the level where the answer matters commercially.

This article is for anyone evaluating Wix for SEO, anyone already on Wix and worried they made the wrong choice, and anyone whose agency is telling them to migrate off Wix because "you cannot do SEO on it." That last claim is the one I want to dismantle most directly, because it is wrong, and it costs businesses money.

The reputation problem: why Wix gets unfairly dismissed

Let me start with the honest part. Wix did have a bad SEO reputation, and it earned it. For years, the platform produced bloated frontend code, slow page loads, rigid URL structures, and limited control over the technical fundamentals that SEOs care about. If you tested Wix in 2018, 2019, or even 2021, the criticisms you read about were largely fair. The platform was built for ease of use first, search visibility second.

That reputation calcified into industry consensus. SEOs told clients to avoid Wix. Agencies refused to work on Wix sites. Comparison blogs ranked Wix below WordPress, Shopify, and Squarespace specifically because of SEO concerns. The reputation was so durable that even now, in 2026, you can find SEO professionals dismissing Wix based on what they observed five or six years ago.

What changed in 2022, and why it matters

Around 2022, Wix made a strategic shift that does not get enough credit in industry conversations. They brought Crystal Carter on as Head of SEO Communications, and later expanded her remit to include AI Search Communications as that conversation took over the industry. Crystal is not a marketing hire dressed up with an SEO title. She is a genuine practitioner with two decades of experience, a global speaker at Google Search Central, BrightonSEO, MozCon, and SMX, and a regular voice in the conversations that shape how the industry thinks about search.

This matters because when an SEO of that calibre joins a platform team, two things happen. First, the platform itself starts to take SEO seriously at the product level, not just the marketing level. Second, the broader SEO community starts to engage with the platform on its actual merits rather than its outdated reputation.

From 2022 onward, the changes Wix shipped were substantive. Server-side rendering. Proper schema markup support. Customizable URL slugs. Robots.txt editing. Canonical tag control. Wix is not the platform it was in 2018. The blogs that still describe it that way are reviewing a product that no longer exists.

None of this means Wix is suddenly the best platform for every project. There are still scenarios where I would recommend WordPress or a custom build, and I will get to those. But the blanket "Wix is bad for SEO" position that you still see repeated in industry blogs is, in 2026, simply outdated.

What Wix actually does well now

I want to be specific about what works, because vague praise does not help anyone making a decision. Here is what I have personally seen Wix handle well across multiple client engagements:

The technical foundation is genuinely solid

Server-side rendering means search engines see fully rendered HTML, not a JavaScript shell that needs executing. Sitemaps are auto-generated and submitted. Schema markup is built in for common content types and customisable for the rest. Canonical tags are set sensibly by default. None of this was true a few years ago. All of it is now.

    The integrations save real time

One-click connection to Google Search Console matters more than it sounds. The Semrush integration inside the dashboard means clients can do passable keyword research without leaving the platform. Google Business Profile management connects directly. For local businesses especially, this collapses a workflow that would otherwise span four or five tools.

The platform's AI search readiness is ahead of the curve

This is where Wix has quietly moved ahead of most competitors. Their AI Visibility Overview tracks brand presence on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude. The AI SEO Assistant generates meta tags and identifies issues. Whether or not you are already optimising for AI search, having a platform that takes the shift seriously matters. Most builders are still acting like 2018 SEO is the only kind that exists.

It is built for clients to actually use

This is the underrated point. SEO does not just live in code. It lives in whether the marketing team can update a meta description without filing a ticket. Whether the founder can add a blog post without logging into a development environment. Whether content can ship at the cadence the strategy needs. Wix's interface is built for non-developers in a way WordPress simply is not, and that compounds over time. Strategy without execution velocity is just a deck.

Where Wix still has limits (an honest look)

I am not here to tell you Wix is perfect. It is not. There are scenarios where the platform's constraints will work against you, and pretending otherwise would betray the same lack of credibility that the dismissive blogs have on the other side. If you are weighing a build or rebuild, our Wix Studio development work covers both sides.

Here are the situations where I would not default to recommending Wix:

    • Very large e-commerce catalogues. If you are running a store with thousands of SKUs and complex variant logic, Wix is technically capable but Shopify is purpose-built for the workflow.
    • Highly custom SEO architectures. If you need unusual URL structures, complex programmatic page generation at scale, or deep edge-case tinkering, the flexibility of WordPress or a headless setup gives you more room.
    • Headless content delivery. If your strategy involves a content layer feeding multiple frontends, Wix is not the right fit.
    • Heavy developer customisation. Wix Studio narrows this gap considerably for agencies, but if your team lives in code, the WordPress ecosystem still has more depth.

For roughly 80% of small-to-mid market businesses, none of those edge cases apply. The platform has the SEO capability, the technical foundation, the integrations, and the AI readiness that genuinely matter. The decision should be made on actual fit, not on a reputation issue from 2018.

    §

The lazy advice you should ignore

If your current SEO consultant or agency has told you "you need to migrate off Wix to do real SEO," I would genuinely encourage you to ask them when they last seriously evaluated the platform. The answer is often "I read it was bad once" or "I just do not work on Wix." Neither is a reason for you to spend tens of thousands of euros migrating a perfectly functional site.

Migration is expensive. Beyond the cost of the new build, you risk losing rankings during the transition, breaking internal linking structures, dealing with redirects at scale, and rebuilding trust signals that took years to accumulate. Migrations are sometimes necessary. They should never be done on the basis of platform prejudice.

    "

If your agency cannot do SEO on Wix, the question is not whether Wix is the problem. The question is whether the agency is.

What to do if you are already on Wix and want to do SEO right

I am not going to give you a 47-step checklist here, because honestly, that is the lazy way of writing this kind of article and it does not help anyone. Wix's own SEO guide covers the platform-specific basics better than I could in a generic listicle. What I will give you instead is the strategic framing that most checklists miss.

SEO on Wix is the same as SEO anywhere. The platform handles the technical foundation. Your job is the part the platform cannot do for you: keyword strategy that aligns with commercial intent, content that earns trust and rankings, link-building that signals authority, and the operational discipline to execute consistently over months. The platform debate distracts from this. The work is the same regardless of whether you are on Wix, WordPress, or a custom build.

If you want a more concrete starting point, three things tend to matter most:

    01
Stop competing for the obvious head terms.

The fastest path to rankings is usually finding the commercially valuable searches that established competitors have overlooked.

    02
    Use Wix's built-in tools properly.

The SEO Setup Checklist, the Search Console integration, the Semrush keyword research, the schema settings. These are not toys, they are real tools, and most Wix site owners use approximately 20% of them.

    03
Treat content as compounding investment, not output.

A consistent content cadence with strategic intent beats sporadic posting with no plan, on every platform.

Beyond that, the answers depend on your specific business, market, and goals. Generic checklists are how blogs rank for "Wix SEO." They are not how businesses grow.

    The bottom line

Wix is good for SEO in 2026 in a way it was not in 2018. The infrastructure is solid. The integrations are useful. The AI search readiness is ahead of the field. There are still edge cases where another platform is the better choice, and I will tell any client that openly when it applies. But the default position of dismissing Wix on platform grounds is dated, lazy, and costing businesses real growth.

If you are on Wix and want to know what is actually possible for your business, the answer is almost certainly more than your current results suggest. The question is not whether the platform can support good SEO. It can. The question is whether the strategy and execution behind it match.

A final note on platform debates

The longer I do this work, the more I notice that platform debates are usually a distraction from the actual problem. Businesses do not fail at SEO because they chose Wix or WordPress. They fail because their strategy is unfocused, their execution is inconsistent, or their agency is recommending a migration to a stack they happen to charge more for. The platform debate gives everyone permission to avoid the harder questions.

Wix is one of many tools you can use to grow organically. In the right hands, with the right strategy, it works. We have the trophy to prove it.
