Local marketing, Underdog campaign
How a mobile massage therapist became the #1 Google result for the most competitive local term in her city.
A campaign nominated at the European Search Awards and Global Search Awards. Built on a budget that should not have been enough. Won by treating Google Business Profile and customer reviews as the strategic centre of gravity, not an afterthought.
About Justina Massage
Justina is a massage therapist based in The Hague who originally operated as a mobile practitioner, travelling to clients in their homes. With ambitions to transition into a salon-owning business, she came to Unnamed Project needing two things at once: a new website that could attract clients and convert them into bookings, and a marketing strategy strong enough to compete in The Hague's saturated massage market. The budget for both, combined, was limited.
Challenge
A small budget, an ambitious goal, and a market full of established competitors.
The Hague is not a small market. Massage salons, wellness clinics, mobile therapists, and franchise operators all compete for the same handful of high-intent searches. Bigger competitors had been investing in their websites and marketing for years. They had domain authority, backlink profiles, and Google Business Profiles full of reviews. Justina had a website that needed rebuilding from scratch and almost no online visibility to speak of.
The brief was simple in concept and difficult in execution. Help Justina transition from a mobile therapist into a salon owner. Get her ranking for the searches that actually drive bookings. Do it on a budget that ruled out the conventional playbook of expensive backlinks, paid placements, and large content campaigns.
When you cannot outspend competitors, you have to find a higher-leverage lever.
For local service businesses, that lever is almost always Google Business Profile and customer reviews. They are cost-free to deploy. They compound over time. They directly feed the local pack, which is where most local searches actually convert. Most small businesses use perhaps 30% of what is possible here. The ones that win their market use closer to 100%.
Approach
One keyword. One website. One outcome.
The strategy was built around a single principle: identify the search term with the highest commercial value, then concentrate every available resource on winning it. Most agencies spread limited budgets across many keywords and many tactics, hoping for compounding. We chose the opposite, focusing intensity on the one term that mattered most.
Strategic keyword targeting: "Massage Den Haag"
Through detailed keyword analysis using Semrush, we identified "Massage Den Haag" as the highest-value commercial term in the market. High volume, strong purchase intent, and directly aligned with how people actually search for a massage in The Hague. Secondary keywords like "full body massage Den Haag" extended the strategy without diluting it.
Google Business Profile as the strategic centre
For local marketing, Google Business Profile is not a checklist item. It is the single most important asset, and we treated it that way. Complete optimisation of every field. Categories, services, hours, photos, attributes, and posts. Direct integration with the website. Active management of Q&A and updates. The result was a profile that signalled credibility and relevance to Google, and answered the questions potential clients had before they ever clicked through.
Reviews as the conversion and ranking engine
Reviews are the single highest-leverage lever in local marketing, and most small businesses underuse them. We built a personalised review request system for Justina, with messages tailored to send to clients after appointments. The volume, freshness, and quality of Google reviews moved the rankings, built trust with potential clients, and created a flywheel where every satisfied customer became a search signal.
A new website, built lean on Wix
The existing website was not ready to support a marketing push. We rebuilt on Wix, which delivered a high-quality site with an easy backend that Justina could manage herself. Wix Studio would have been the default for an agency build, but the budget called for the standard Editor. The result was a site that loaded fast, ranked well, and gave a non-technical owner full control of her own platform.
From WhatsApp bookings to online bookings
One of the most impactful operational changes was switching Justina from WhatsApp-based bookings to online bookings through her website. This single shift transformed a static brochure site into a working booking engine, increased site engagement, and created the conversion mechanism that turned ranking gains into actual revenue.
Education over expensive backlinks
With no budget for paid link-building, we coached Justina directly on cost-free marketing levers. Updating key social media elements. Engaging on platforms in ways that generated quality backlinks naturally. The work required time and discipline rather than money, and that was exactly what was available.
The local marketing engine
Why Google Business Profile decided this campaign.
For a local service business, the Google Business Profile and the local pack that sits above the organic results are often more valuable than the organic rankings themselves. Most searches for "massage Den Haag" never scroll past the map. Whoever wins the local pack wins the bookings.
The combination of a fully optimised profile, consistent review acquisition, and tight integration with the website created compounding signals that pushed Justina to the top of the local pack and held her there.
The transformation
From mobile therapist to salon owner.
The campaign was about more than rankings. It was about helping a local business owner change the shape of her career. The before and after says it best.

Award recognition
Recognised at two of the industry's most prestigious awards.
The campaign earned nominations at both the European Search Awards 2024 and the Global Search Awards 2024, in categories that recognise innovation, strategic thinking, and impact in marketing. Trajectory
How the campaign unfolded.
The first two weeks were about building the foundation. A new website on Wix, configured for marketing from the ground up. The booking system migrated from WhatsApp to online. The site delivered fast, designed to be managed by a non-technical owner, optimised for the keyword strategy that would follow.
Once the website was live, the marketing work began in earnest. Detailed keyword research identified "Massage Den Haag" as the high-value target. Secondary keywords were mapped. On-page content was structured to align with search intent. The Google Business Profile was rebuilt from the ground up: every field optimised, categories aligned to the strategy, photos uploaded, services detailed, attributes completed. Then the review acquisition system started running, with personalised post-appointment messages going out to every satisfied client.
The combination of those two levers is what moved the rankings faster than typical for a local marketing campaign in a competitive market. Within months, Justina had achieved the #1 position for "Massage Den Haag" in both the local pack and the organic results. She was ranking in the top three for multiple related local terms. The campaign demonstrated that with the right local marketing foundation, disciplined review acquisition, and sharp keyword targeting, even a small budget can deliver category-defining results.
What this means for marketing leaders
Four takeaways for any local business competing in a saturated market.
Most local marketing advice assumes you have a meaningful budget. This case study is what local marketing looks like when you do not. The lessons apply to any small business owner who wants to compete in a market where bigger players have more to spend.
Reviews and Google Business Profile beat almost everything else.
For local service businesses, the local pack is more valuable than the organic rankings. Google Business Profile optimisation and a steady flow of fresh reviews are the highest-leverage moves you can make. Most agencies underweight this. The ones that win local marketing do not.
One keyword can transform a business.
Local marketing does not require ranking for hundreds of terms. Ranking #1 for the single most valuable search in your category often does more for a business than scattering effort across dozens of weaker keywords.
The booking system is part of the marketing system.
Switching from WhatsApp to online bookings was not a separate project. It was central to the marketing strategy. Without conversion infrastructure on the website, ranking gains do not become bookings, and the campaign would have failed regardless of position.
Constraint forces strategic clarity.
A larger budget would have invited the temptation to spread effort across many keywords and tactics. The constraint forced a single-keyword strategy and a relentless focus on the highest-leverage levers. Sometimes the best strategic discipline is the one a small budget makes you choose.
